One day after losing their soul-cat, person goes to a shelter to pet some cute kitties, then ends up getting adopted by a sad cat who was surrendered by his owner and has been waiting for love for a long time

Sometimes, cats adopt us when we least expect it. 

We say this often, of course, and we have an endless amount of proof. Stories of people getting adopted cats when they simply go on a walk. Stories of people being handed kittens in a drive-through window, in the middle of a work shift. Stories of people getting adopted by cats at midnight when they are on a picnic, having the cat follow them home. Even one story that we will never forget about a kitten flying through someone's window straight into their lap, and instead of the person wondering how or why it happened, the first thing they did was go get kitten supplies for their new fluffball. It nearly never happens when you expect it. But sometimes, it's even more unexpected than other times. 

For the person who told their story on r/cats, it happened at the least expected moment. They had just lost their soul-cat. 12 years of having one kitty, love that one kitty, and in an instant… the rainbow bridge called her. The owner was heartbroken, hollow, not knowing what to do with themselves now that she was gone. They didn't know life without cats anymore. And without any intentions to adopt a cat a day after their baby passed, they went to a shelter. Just to be around cats. To pet them. To see them. To try to handle the grief. But in that shelter, there was only one cat. He was surrendered by his owner, and he's been at the shelter for a long time, ready for love, for a second chance. They weren't planning to adopt. And they didn't. That's not how it works. They didn't adopt Charlie. Charlie adopted them. And even though he will never replace their previous cat, he might help them start the healing process.

    My cat of 12 years d d this week, and the next day I went to the shelter to pet some kitties since I've never been without a cat. I ended up coming home with the only cat there.

    My 12 year old cat had a pretty quick decline after a mass was found in her stomach and she had to be put down. I was devastated, she was my childhood cat who I brought with me when I moved out. She was my best friend.

    The very next day I was feeling hollow and just needed to pet a cat so I went to the local shelter just to hang out with some kitties. There was an older kitty there that was alone and was so incredibly sweet I just had to bring him home.

  • We understand the guilt, but we don't think that you should have it. Charlie is not a replacement for your old cat. He's another, completely different cat who needed love and a home, and he saw you, and he knew that you could give that to him. He chose you. And we think that you being chosen, you helping another cat who really needed your help, is going to help you too.

    velkana Nothing will ever replace the cat that you lost. The hole in your heart is still there. I am sure you can feel it, even now. You just grew your heart a little bigger to accommodate a new kitty -- one who desperately needed you, at least much as you needed him. You did a good. I am very sorry for your loss.

    MagickCityGirl Try not to do that to yourself. They cannot be "replaced" when I lost my soul girl, I adopted a new one a week later. I love this one in a totally different way, and adopted her gave my lost love somewhere to go. I also believe my cat had a part in finding her

    Or you were sent there to rescue that cat by your cat, by the gods or by karma but something made you go and something made you want to help that cat. Don't feel guilty. Your cat wouldn't want that. She'd want you to be happy.

    Alert-Ratio-7892 I find this a "meant to be". Charlie had been looking for a home for a really long time and your heart is looking for a companion to heal with for a really long time. You two really needed each other and it just happens the one kitty you find is him.

    I'm sorry your pumpkin passed away, that is the hard part of living with our animals. Yet it does seem like the universe wanted to align itself so that you would meet Charlie, who sounds like he needs you just like you need him. Welcome home Charlie! You both have some healing to do and I hope you both find happiness with each other.
